New Epson printers individual serial numbers encoded onto their cartridge chips. Each serial number can only be used once. This means a resetting chip cannot be developed. Presently the only option aside genuine OEM Epson brand cartridges is to use aftermarket cartridges. The issue with aftermarket cartridges is that there is only one chip manufacturer in the world and there is only 10 serial numbers known for most models. This means only 10 individual cartridges can be used for each colour. The 11th cartridge will fail to be recognised and the only option after this is to use OEM genuine cartridges.
To overcome these issues a modified version of the printer firmware has been developed. Once loaded onto the printer it turns off the printers need to have any chips attached to the cartridges and will always read a full ink level (regardless of what level of ink is inside the cartridges). This means an Inklink can be fitted to these printers. The following printer models are suitable for chipless firmware and can run an Inklink continuous ink system
Epson Expression: XP-2100, XP-2105, XP-3100, XP-4100, XP-4105 & XP-8500
Epson Workfroce: WF-2830, WF-2850, WF-2860, WF-3720, WF-3725 & WF-3730
Epson Workforce Pro: WF-C5290, WF-C5790 (300ml refillable cartridges)
Epson XP15000
NEW: Epson Expression XP-2200, XP-2205, XP-3100, XP-4200 & XP-4205
The firmware has been developed by a third party and available from inkchip.net
The website provide full instructions on how to load and install the firmware. It is worth pointing out that Rihac do not warranty or provide ongoing support for the chipless software as it is made by a third party. Having said that we have installed chipless Inklink systems into thousands printers already with no issues.
Once the firmware has been installed you need to activate the firmware using an ‘Activation Key’. The price of the ‘Activation Keys’ vary from model to model but range from $30 USD to $69 USD. Once you have the activation key you run a small program and upon entering the key the printer becomes ‘chipless’. Rihac buy activation keys in bulk and are able to offer them at a cheaper rate and in Australia dollars. Activation keys can be purchased from the rihac website (by clicking here) by phoning our store on (03) 9005 5555 open 9-5pm mon-fri. Prices vary from model to model But are typically between $45-$65
Once the chipless firmware has been activated (using the activation key) an Inklink CISS system can be installed. |

Installing chipless fimrware is quite simple. The only requirements are that it must be done using a PC (not a MAC) and the printer needds to be connected with a USB cable. Rihac also provide complete instructions when purchasing a CISS or chipless activation key. If you have any questions please review the frequently asked Q&A section below or call us on (03) 9005 5555 (open 9-5pm mon-fri) |

Q1: How Do I install the Firmware? A1: It does vary from model to model. The Inkchip.net site shows a video on how to install the firmware for most models. But feel free to contact us as we can guide you through the process if you have difficulties and our Inklink installation manuals show you the latest chipless firmware installation method.
Q2: Does the firmware void my printer warranty? A2:We would assume so, however the modified firmware is easily removed without trace by simply updating the printers firmware using the Epson software updater (provided with your printer) or via the Printer’s LCD panel if it has one.
Q3: Can I remove the firmware and go back to normal cartridges? A3:Yes, absolutely the firmware can be removed easily leaving no trace by simply updating the printer as per Q2.
Q4: If my printer dies can I transfer the firmware over to another printer? A4:No. The chipless firmware is locked to the printers serial number, so if something happens to your printer, you would need to buy another activation key for a new printer.
Q5: What if I accidentally update my printers firmware? A5:If you accidentally overwrite the firmware it will go back to it’s pre-chipless state and cannot use the Inklink . During the activation process you are provided with a recovery key (a sequence of letters and numbers). This recovery key can be used to recover the chipless firmware if you accidentally overwrite the firmware.
Q6: I’m confused at the cost of getting the chipless firmware and an inklink system A6:It does vary from model to model but here is a typical breakdown for the XP4200
Firmware Activation - $59.99
Inklink - $140
Installation charge - $45 Instore at our Maidstone, Victroria HQ, or, free if you do it yourself.
Total: - $244.99, or $199.99 DIY
